3:00                    Welcome Both Erika and I will be leading the meeting today.

3:00-3:07          Sam Houston Summer Academy:  Held at Sam Houston State University. This camp is five days long

                          College Visit: Marisol a board member and Jasmine’s mother will be taking a trip to Texas A&M University and she has space for three other girls. This trip will be in June, if any girls are interested please let me know so I can give her your contact information and further plans can be made

3:07-3:20          Summer Activities: the summer activities we are looking into for this summer are the following: Summer reading (“Twilight”) 3 sessions, meet at Panera.  Community Service at MAM (organized by Priscila and Carolina) and car wash at the beginning of July (organized be Vanessa and Shirley).  Any fun days can be organized by all the girls.

3:30-4:00           Speaker: Coordinator of post secondary guidance and counseling programs in SBISD, Hortencia Vega will speaking on AP, dual credit and honors classes.

    Notes from Sunday, May 18 ALC student meeting

    Minutes from Sunday, May 18th ALC meeting, 3 – 4:15 pm 

 

·         We talked to see what was ALC going to do over the summer.  These are some ideas/hopes.

·         For the summer, we were thinking book club like we always do and a possible book is Twilight. This would be toward the end of June, the beg. of Jul.

·         We also decided to try some volunteering, MAM came up as a possibility and Priscila is in charge arranging this. Other places that the group could go vol. at was Lakewood Church.

·         Maybe have some socials during summer, like maybe cleaning up a park or beach. have some car washes. or have a pool day.

·         There is going to be a Leadership Retreat this summer right? They informed me that it MIGHT be at the Herrera's lake house or something like that.

·         Graduation Party for the seniors?

·         Some events that the girls would like to attend again if there was a chance was the a) Women in Energy, b) Shell Oil, c) visit either A&M, UT Austin, Rice Univ., Le Cordon Bleu (Austin), or Sam Houston Univ.

·         and they showed interest in:

o   having writing workshops.

o   course SAT practice

o   FASFA workshops

o   Awareness walks (the march of dimes, breast cancer walk, etc.)

 3:01-3:10          TAMUCC island day: Erika and Jessica

                              University trip to TAMUCC, during island day. This is just an opportunity for you to explore the campus and learn more about the university. April 12. Every girl needs to pay $25 for the hotel since we have to stay there overnight (bring spending money if you want). We also need parents to drive, specially form the girls that are interested in going. Otherwise this will not be possible.   

 3:10-3:20            Points (Maria Treviño) explanation of how each girl needs to start keeping track of their own points.

3:25-3:45             Upcoming events:

University of Houston Visit: (Vanessa and Shirley Serrano?)  Monday 17, tour of the     campus and lunch afterwards. where should we meet? And time, most people say at 2pm or any time. Contact Ingrid Pacheco about it: ingrid3000@netzero.com

 

                              Visit to Shell Oil:  shell oil spring forum (the one at Diary Ashford) April 23 5-7pm.  Could we do it earlier from 4:30-6:30?  Someone needs to be in charge of this event. Who wants to go and if there is a need for transportation.

                               Nomination for officers for next year: any interested girls? It is a good idea to start thinking about it so these can girls can shadow the current officers. Such as the president.

                              Reminder: on the importance in attending the meetings.

                               Introduction Everyone introduce themselves to other girls and say what their interest are for the future and needs (like universities in mind, careers etc. we need to do this for possible mentors)

3:15-3:30             Discuss the role of each girl in ALC

                             We need to fill other positions such as community service etc.  and each girl should have responsibilities to help out as much as possible

    FAFSA workshop Ripley House   for juniors and seniors and parents. February    16,       2008.  9-12pm here at the Ripley House.

                              Talento Bilingue de Houston NIGHT. Feb22, 2008, at 7:00pm. Where: 33 S.Jensen Dr. Houston, TX 77003-115. ALC will pay for the student’s ticket. The cost is $7. We need a head count today of who will go so Virginia can get the tickets.

                              Writing workshop:  Feb. 23 (Saturday) 9-12pm, at HCC Town & Country. English teachers Mecum and Young will teach the workshop. Please bring writing sample to work one whether from school or scholarship applications etc.

                               Visit to Shell Oil:  shell oil spring forum (the one at Diary Ashford) we need to finalize a date and other details (April 14-25 except the 17). Who is interested?

                              Thy, Ashley, Gloria Victorino…etc will now talk to us a little bit about their college experience so far. These girls were all previews ALC members. I encourage you to as questions to any of the girls.

3:45-3:55              TAMUCC island day: Erika

                              University trip to TAMUCC, during island day. this is just an opportunity for you to explore the campus and learn more about the university. The two possible days for us going are February 9 and April 12. There is a fee of $10 for the event, however since this is a long trip it has to be overnight which means a hotel will have to be reserved etc. We need to see if there really is any interest to make this happen.

3:55-4:10              Writing workshop is there any interest in having one maybe end of January

                              Houston Food Bank volunteering   this is an opportunity for us to do some service work as a group. We need at least five girls that want to do it so we can go as a group and also see what days work so we can schedule it. The volunteering shifts are as following:

 3:15-3:35             Open House Second annual Amigas Latinas for College Open House Saturday December 15 @ Spring Branch Family Development Center, 8575 Pitner (spring Branch, off Hollister between Hammerly and Clay.Rd public Invited.

                              We will have a meeting on Thursday December 6 from 6-7pm at Panera Bread  on  290 near W. Tidwell, on same side of freeway as Wal-Mart, Office Depot and PetsMart. This to role play the parts we will have at the Open House December 15th.

                              We need to find out what everyone is interested in doing at the open house and sign up it. All the girls must wear the following: white collar blouse, black slacks, skirt, etc (dress nice). Detail on what will be going on at the Open House.

3:35-3:40              Also… we need to reach out to the inactive members or the older ones. New members are also important especially with the open house coming up. Watch the website.

                              Scholarship Applications All seniors should choose three scholarships and apply for them.

                              Grades If you are struggling with any classes and need tutoring let us know so we can arrange something.

3:40-3:55              Virginia will talk now as a struggling young women and student something that

                             We have three guests with us today: Isabel Martinez, Cynthia Santos and Teresa Carney. They are here to tell us a little bit about themselves and we can ask questions at the end.

3:50-3:55                Fundraisers

                              El Tiempo cantina restaurants are conducting an AL scholarship Day ALL DAY November 11 which means 40% of their proceeds go to ALC. If you eat out at all that day, go to either location @ 5602 Washington Ave. Houston TX 77007 or 31130 Richmond Ave. Houston TX 77098.  Let your sever know that you are from Amigas Latinas for college. Continue telling your friends, your school-anything-to get the word out. Let people know all the funds will go toward the Education fund to help members with education expenses.

3:55-4:00                    Events

                              Young women energized 2007- Monday November 5 @ the Hess club on Westheimer from 6:30-8:30pm. We will meet at the starbucks by Memorial High School on the Katy freeway 9315 from 4:15-4:30 and will leave promptly at 4:30. Dress nice please!!!!

3:00                     Welcome Girls and guests!! Thank you, Centro Cristiano Vida Nueva, for allowing us to have our meeting here, especially Francisco Rodriguez. Our meeting will consist of two or three speakers, one a parent, one a college student, and a long-term member of ALC after our regular meeting.  

3:15-3:30         Officer Positions

                        By next meeting we shall have new officers. We will vote and elect new officers for the 2007-2008 school year on email. Candidates should say a little bit about themselves and why they are qualified to run.

3:30-3:40        Writing/Literacy Workshop—September 29

                        Being head up by English teachers Ms. Mecum and Ms. Young. This is a FREE writing workshop to help improve English writing skills so that you may be prepared to compete in today’s world. Being held at Individual Language Learning Center from 9 am-12 noon at 1917 Gessner (between Long Point and Hammerly). Be sure to bring a writing sample to work on! Sign up sheet.

3:40-3:45           SAT Workshop

                        Knowsys Test Prep LLC of Arlington, Texas did this workshop for ALC last year which included 21 hours of instruction over several Saturdays. We must have at least 10 girls for this to take place. The cost is $180 except for members who have been active at least 6 months. You must register in advance to take advantage of the workshop. Dates: Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 Nov. 3, 10, 17 @ Westchester Academy (info on the web). 

3:45-3:50           Community Service Opportunities  

                        * Spring Branch ISD Parent U – Amigas Latinas for College Forum: Saturday Oct. 13 from 8-12:30 @ Spring Woods High School. This will be a ALC workshop which will include a panel discussion in Spanish by ALC members, grads and parents.

                               * Spring Branch ISD’s annual College Night: October 30-31 from 6:30-8:30 pm. For this community service, Spanish speaking translators are needed. Earn hours and points by attending. Call Ms. Vega 713-464-1511 Ext 2265

                               * Pine Shadows Elementary:  Thursdays throughout September thru October (until the 18th of Oct.) PSE will be needing babysitters. Call Ms. Leal 713-819-4069.

                                       * Meet the Authors of UH Arte Publico Press September 28-30 @ the George R. Brown Convention Center.

 

                                       * Encuentro Day at Sam Houston University Sat. November 3rd. Invite parents and siblings because transportation, lunch, admissions and financial aid information is provided. Both in English and Spanish.

                              Hope everyone’s summer went well!!

3:15-3:20               Officer Positions

                              At the leadership retreat the girls discussed the various leadership roles and chairs they could take up. Some even decided on a position they might like to hold.

3:20-3:25               Voting—How it will work

                              We need leadership positions soon, so we will begin the voting process as soon as it’s available to us. Most likely we will be voting online, so be consistent with your emails. You will submit one name for each position if there are multiple people running, and at the end of the voting session, the votes will be tallied and an email listing the chosen girls will be distributed.

3:25-3:35                    Changes with the ALC Group

                              ALC will be undergoing “reconstruction:” membership will be limited to twice a year (September and January), attendance will be critical, and the girls should be more committed to the scholarships, community service, etc. available to them.   

3:35-3:45                    What’s Coming Up

                              Writing Workshop September 29 at 1917 Gessner between Hammerly and Long Point.  This workshop is to help you at various aspects of your writing. More information on the way.

                                        El Tiempo Cantina “Amigas Latinas for College Scholarship Day” Sunday, November 11, 2007 Eat out at one of the two restaurant locations and 40% of the proceeds goes to our ALC fund!
